Data contained within the device may be exchanged via a reader machine or remotely through radio frequency (RF) transfer. The exchange of information via the contacts built into the device occurs when the device is inserted into a reader machine such as might be encountered when the cardholder makes a purchase, uses an ATM, or accesses the internet through a personal computer. To meet some applications, such as a "pass" at security gates or to pay subway tolls, the e-pass device may be configured to send data to an external reader via an antenna coiled in the device. When the device comes within range, the reader’s radio signal causes a small current in the antenna, prompting the device to broadcast the necessary information to the reader. In these RF applications, the external reader is permitted to access only the information the cardholder has specifically agreed to keep available to RF readers.
